Cohort can be beyond time, it can also measure by user source. I track the users who came in from itunes as a cohort to see how they compare to Android or web users.

StartupCFO : Should you do more than one business at a time?

I can barely handle two, highly related product lines. I don't know how someone could do two businesses at once. When I was an investor this wasn't just a red flag, it was a no-go. But maybe these days you want to seed fund people, not ideas, so they may throw a few MVP's out there to see which one(s) take off - assuming any of them are one of those magic ideas that grow without all the hard work my stuff seems to require...

Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : NYC and Boston Tech VC - Mind the Gap

Boston has a lot of great tech and programming talent. Keep in mind good co-founders are hard to find!

I don't think there is any kind of signal if one stays in Boston vs NYC, but the bigger question is why is New York having such success funding early stage consumer focused companies? And what happens in 5 years when most of those companies go out of business but a few hit it big - do the entrepreneurs recycle cash, management and technical expertise back into the New York scene?

Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : If they break up Google what will be the non-search part?

Well, before some government lawyer type starts an investigation they ought to know what the heck their desired end goal would be if they started actual proceedings.

Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : Should business schools admit some unethical people on purpose

Of course, yes, you make good points. But how does one actually teach someone how to stand up to an unethical boss or co-worker? It's pretty hard to do w/o actually being in a situation. All these schools are trying really hard to actually teach it - my point was that working in school with unethical people could actually be a low risk way to learn how to deal with them.

Well, just wait until Google opens an office there and starts paying $250k per developer... then hiring will be tough! In all seriousness, if you can put together a good team there then you've got just as good of a chance as anyone else anywhere else in the world.

Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : 2 Cents on the DST guy and YC

I may not have explained my statement very well. The signal occurs in the round following Milner's first investment. If he chooses to try to add to (or defend) his ownership position in the NEXT financing round for one of the 42 companies he is sending a signal that only that one is interesting enough to warrant his attention. I'd assume he is trying to purchase an option to invest more money in the subsequent rounds by paying $150k to get an early look, establish a relationship and see how good the company/management team are. If he picks and chooses which companies he continues to put more money into he is tacitly rejecting the others, sending a negative signal to the other potential investors.
