I'm a UW student and I see SPD and UWPD around all the time. I say hi and they say hi back. I'm a minority (Asian) and I've never had a problem.

The media often takes whatever they can and sensationalizes it. I'm almost positive that what they're giving here isn't the complete story.

This, plus the fact that our chickens are given a chlorine bath for disinfection, and some other odd nonsense is really making me nervous.. .http://blogs.webmd.com/health-ehome/2011/03/why-did-the-chicken-take-a-bath-in-chlorine.html

Unfortunately, DOT cameras aren't recorded except for during traffic studies, or for special occasions like geese on the roadway or something. My friend tried to get accident footage and they didn't have it.

Apparently they used to, but I'm guessing because of liability purposes they stopped. People would crash into each other, find a footage, and then sue the DOT for no reason...

Perhaps by our American standards. Please, if there was enough coordination, commitment and urgency to fix the problem (from the top of the chain to the very bottom) it can be done. With today's technology and infrastructure in place, fixing this section of road in Bellevue should be a breeze. Things get held up in bureaucracy in both the private and public sectors for way too long.

Even though the Japanese example didn't have utilities in that specific section, there were plenty of other areas around the country that were devastated. Yet they were efficient enough to repair a rural road in that kind of time, by finding the manpower (workers who returned to work the day after the earthquake) and the resources quickly.

Remember our response for Katrina? I can guarantee you, if that exact same thing happened in this country the road would be closed for a month.

I'm sorry, but six to nine weeks is just pathetic.

It's rare to see people who actually know what they talk about, and I'm liking this comment thread so far.

Hopefully Amtrak Cascades will become more reliable and faster with the Point Defiance Bypass and signalling upgrades.

On a side note, the average delay on Amtrak trains is 90 minutes. Japan's Shinkansen has an average delay of 6 seconds...

Exactly. I wasn't even talking high speed rail though. Conventional trains elsewhere in the world already run up to 80+ mph on some regular tracks.

So far I think only Russia runs high speed rail with at-grade crossings and that has resulted in a few deaths...

Trains run faster than 60 mph through towns all over the world all the time. In fact, we have the slowest trains of any developed country. It won't be a problem if idiots like these don't exist.
