I think the comments reflect a poor understanding of the issue, based on weak reporting.

As an agent in the Leavenworth and Lake Wenatchee area, we have known these changes were coming for years. These increases would have occurred under a McCain presidency too.

The law bases the lease rates on the appraised value of the land. On Lake Wenatchee a waterfront lot on the North Shore sells between $500,000 and $700,000. Private owners have been underpaying for years and it's naive to pretend as if they had fee simple ownership when clearly they did not.

The Seattle Times had a front page article on the same topic and explored it with much more depth.
