FACT: American Pit Bull Terriers score HIGH on the American Temperment test and TIE with the much beloved Golden Retreiver. FACT: The SPCA says that 90% of calls they get about pit bulls are MISIDENTIFED. FACT: There is NOT a single documented case in the WHOLE of Canada of one of the banned breeds (and usually 3/4 different breeds are targeted in the ban) EVER having killed a child since stats were first taken in the late sixties. However there has been 39 child fatalies. FACT: BSL has NOT worked anywhere where it has been incorporated. Germany, Netherlands Italy ALL recinded their bans based n documented Evidence bite states did NOT decrease and Italy was UP to 98 banned or restricted dogs when they removed their ban. FACT: The number one biter in Denver NOW is the Lab. Are THEY next? FACT: A recent study done by SPCA says that if a incident happens and the dog cannot be labeled a pit, they are NOT interested in reporting dog bites. LOOK UP the study done called "PANIC POLICY MAKING; Breed Bans in Canada and the United States".

God save us from reporters who don't do their homework and perpetulate myths and stereotypes. Firstly PLEASE LOOK UP "Pit bulls is the media biased". What a eye opener to the gross and neglegent amount of reporting on THESE types of dogsand ignoring other dogs. SECOND: Look up the professional study done on "BITE FORCE COMPETITION" Out of the German Shepard and Rottie the so called "Pit Bull" came in LAST every time. As for the total MYTH about locking jaws? OH COME ON... U R KIDDING US RIGHT? .

In THIS day and age this is even QUOTED? The Dr needs to go back to kindergarden. Here is something on THAT issue IF you allow links here. http://thetruthaboutbsl.blogspot.com/2009/07/does...

Even the ASPCA has spoken to the issue of misidentifcation and the OVER reporting of certain dog bites in a study they did.

When will this modern day witch hunt end and of course the misinformation and the IGNORANCE?

My Goodness what the MEDIA won't do to get a Few More HITS! Look at the Picture! There is a drop of legitimacy in this article. These dogs are in TROUBLE do the media's BULL and Hype. The OSPCA has said this, The National Canine Research Coucil's studies have PROVEN this. Thanks MEDIA for the 21st Century WITCH HUNT. You people have sunk to NEW and LOWER levels. Oh for the days of Edward R. Murrow and REAL journalism.

People need to look up the Michael Vick dogs and see what happened to these formally seriously abused fighting dogs. FOUR of them are now registered therapy dogs. Out of ALL his dogs, two were put down; one to illness and ONLY one due to human aggression.

“The pit bull is easily the most misunderstood breed of dog in the U.S, unfortunately, it is the very loving and loyal nature of these dogs that makes them prone to exploitation.”
Paul Berry Chief Executive Officer of Best Friends where 22 of Michael Vicks Dogs were sent.

Thanks for caring enough to reply KXAN sadly it seems YOU are the exception as shown below as this is right from the ASPCA.

" A quantitative study by the National Canine Resource Council of dog-bite reportage in a four-day period proves that anti-pit bull bias in the media is more than just a theory—it’s a fact.

1.August 18, 2007—A Labrador mix attacked a 70-year-old man, sending him to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers arrived at the scene and the dog was shot after charging the officers.
This incident was reported in one article in the local paper.

2.August 19, 2007—A 16-month-old child received fatal head and neck injuries after being attacked by a mixed-breed dog.
This attack was reported on twice by the local paper.

3.August 20, 2007—A six-year-old boy was hospitalized after having his ear torn off and receiving a severe bite to the head by a medium-sized, mixed-breed dog.
This incident was reported in one article in the local paper.

4.August 21, 2007—A 59-year-old woman was attacked in her home by two pit bulls and was hospitalized with severe, but not fatal, injuries.
This attack was reported in over 230 articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

Along with over-reporting, false reporting is a major contributor to the public relations nightmare currently facing pit bulls. There is an emerging tendency for all short-haired, stocky dogs to be called pit bulls—and when a dangerous dog’s breed is unknown, the media is not above assuming that the dog involved must have been a pit bull.".

If one looks up the study done by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelity to Animals they state that when incidents happens with dogs the MEDIA will TELL them they are ONLY interested if it involves a "pit bull" therefore it LOOKS like these types of dogs attacks more but THAT is not really the case. Try and get the media to REPORT on responsible dog owners or REAL studies done that actually will EDUCATE the public on how to PREVENT dog bites and attacks, NOT easy I can tell you.

As for stereotyping of owners, enough IS enough. MOST owners are women with families. On most sites, set up to correct the misconception of these dogs, 80% of the members are WOMAN... but RESPONSIBLE owners don't make the PAPERS.

White Trash are people who read only tabloid like news and don't spend a minute in REAL studies or reseach FACTS. Go to the EXPERTS. Read the most extensive and professional TASK FORCE ever done on the issue by the American Medical Veterinary Association called "A Community Approach to Dog Bite Prevention". YOU won't find it EVER quoted in tabloids BUT for those who REALLY care about public safety it is a MUST READ.

Oh for the love of Pete HOW bad is this article? Firstly pit bulls DO NOT WEIGH 100 LBS. If you people don't get that THIS is about getting READERSHIP then you are all as stupid as the owner of THIS dog who was probably a RESIDENT dog and NOT a family dog.
Even the EXPERTS who determine what is a pit bull and what isn't have gone on record that mature males weigh in around 60 to 65 lbs.

The ignorance is simply astonding. Also as bad as the hype and this writers ability to know what the heck a pit bull is.

The LAST site I would quote regarding dog bites is Collen Lynne's site. This site is nothing less than a BSL Lobby group and the stats are WAY beyond questionable. For those of us that follow media reports we KNOW that media labels EVERY short haired medium sized MUTT as pit bulls for and RARELY Corrects ALL the incorrect reporting of "types" of dogs involved in incidents. One can be SURE Ms. Lynn's site DOES NOT correct mistakes by media, which is rampant.

Thank Goodness common sense has prevailed and THIS senator listened to the countless people who are responsible owners of short haired medium sized dogs COMMONLY labeled by media as pit bull type dogs.

Look up what the ASPCA has put out. "http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/advocacy-center/animal-laws-about-the-issues/pit-bull-bias-in-the-media.html
