Just Another iPhone Blog : Do You Trust Sites That Demand Payment for App Reviews?

Patrick, very well said as usual. And, speaking as a fellow OATS member, I completely agree with every point you made. Like you, we have a disclosure at JAMM which is very plain, simple, and transparent. We do not accept monetary compensation for reviews. We do accept samples which are loaned or given to us for the purpose of the review, but we will always tell you when that is the case. Then, the reader is free to make their own decisions. Why that is so difficult for some sites to grasp is really beyond my understanding. I also agree with your assesment about smaller developers. Frankly, I love working with the "garage band" developers and hobbiests. Finally, thanks for the warning about your experience with Intense Debate. We had been looking into some new comment systems, and I suppose we will take a pass on giving this one another try. :)

Just Another Mobile Monday : Honey I Shrunk the Kids, New iPod Shuffle...

I completely agree, Brandon. Headphones are a peripheral. They should not control the device. For one thing, iPod headphones, like most included headphones suck. If I can't use my Ultimate Ears with it, then I am not biting. Plus, what happens if you lose these headphones? now you have to shell out how much to replace the crappy OEM headphones?? This is a stupid decision. Just terrible. Doug

The controls in the headphone cable is ridiculous and stupid. I never use the headphones that come with any of my devices. And the ones apple includes with the iphone are just as crappy as any of the others. Complete garbage.

Thanks, Twitch. Glad you like the game. Honestly, I wish you had a chance to play it on Windows Mobile. This is one of the rare games which was just much better on Windows Mobile. Hopefully, the expansion packs should be coming to the iPhone/iPod Touch soon in the form of updates.

Doug

I completely agree with you, Wayne. And I know you and I have talked about this in the past. There was just one site that was particularly annoying me lately. :) But I really never understood this practice. Other than just stealing for the sake of stealing, there does not seem to be much fun and profit involved at all. Then again, I also never understood the practice of flooding my inbox with Viagra ads. I guess i just would not make a very good criminal . :) Doug

OK, Birdsoft. I have played with this a bit more and the swipe controls are starting to grow on me. i will admit that I did not completely understand how to use them correctly. The more I use them, however, the more I understand how to use them, and the more I like them. :) But the unicorns and rainbows are too much, even for me. :) Doug

Sort of off topic, but I really do not understand the App store approval process. I mean, I get taking a few days/week to approve a new app or game. You need to make sure it does what it says. But why would it take so long on a point upgrade? here is something with a few bug fixes and a new feature. That shoudl take 10 minutes to check out. Anyway, great job, brandon. :)

Gear Diary : Unboxing the Amazon Kindle 2

Unofficially, battery life is a disappointment. I have not tested it thoroughly, but it is not even close to the sony reader. I think the fact that an image is always displayed on the screen, and the fact that Whispernet is always connected make a huge difference for the battery.

I found the same thing with the Sony as well. It is much taller than the Sony Reader, but the screen is narrower. I was a bit disappointed by that. Still, the Kindle beats the Sony Reader hands down for three reasons: first the controls are efficient and streamlined. The Sony has an awful lot of redundancy in the controls. Second, the Amazon store. Sony's store is difficult to use and poorly stocked (not to mention way too expensive). Third, the software is excellent and full of features, like the web browser and Whispernet).

Douglas S.
Man, Wayne, that bezel really bothers you a lot. :) I honestly do not have a real problem with it. Hardware-wise, I think the Kindle is much, MUCH nicer than the Kindle 1. But honestly, the Sony Reader may still have a slight edge with its larger screen. The software and bookstore blows Sony out of the water. My biggest complaint is the lack of an included case. My cases have still not arrived. :(

That is a nice looking case. :) Wayne, I think the bezels are not as big in person as they appear to you in the photos. While I agree that this space could have been better utilized with a larger screen, I found my hand fit quite nicely on it as designed. I do think, however, that Amazon cheaped out by not including any kind of a cheap case. My case has not arrived yet. :( I hope it comes soon. I need the Kindle on the train and I seriously feel like I am tempting fate every time I look at it.

You bet. Sorry I did not have better pictures. As you know, I have been having problems with photos on my iPod Touch. So, you were kinda stuck with screenshots from other programs as background. :) I wish there was a way that you could make it automatically check your calendar and update periodically. Just automate the whole process. I know that is not possible on the iPod because of their silly restrictions about not running apps in the background. But that would be pretty cool. Anxious to see what you have added in 1.1. :) Doug

Just Another Mobile Monday : Quicklook: Microsoft Gets A Hit With MyPhone…Not Quite A Home Run

Well, Vladimir, I think it is premature to say this is a POS. First, it is a Beta, and an early one at that. So, I am fairly confident that it will continue to develop and improve in the coming months. Second, Microsoft has made it well known that if you are on an exchange server or if you sync via MS Live, then MyPhone will not be able to see your contacts. This is unfortunate, and hopefully we will see some improvements soon.

Doug
