GrassrootsPA : ROHRER CAMP VIDEO: Corbett 'Constitution Grows', 'Living Document' comments...

This is really a nonsensical argument for Sam to make. The "original intent" of the Constitution would authorize slavery and strip women of the right to vote. Even the 2nd amendment would not exist, were it not for the ability to alter the document over time. I'm sure he is trying to whip up some extremist fervor, but even if he were to somehow pull off a win, the Dem candidate could mop the floor with him on this issue alone.

GrassrootsPA : Corbett cell calls a 'catch-22' for candidate...

Does he use the cell phone for campaign calls? It seems pretty likely, so it seems like a valid expense. Panyard seems to be trying to stir up controversy (and perhaps readership?). I seem to recall him running for Gov - maybe he's thinking of trying again.

GrassrootsPA : Dowd, Lamb: PGH pension fund should own parking garages...

This looks like one of the first correct steps the city could take towards patching the pension gap. Rather than a quick one-time cash grab by leasing them, they have found a way a) to generate regular and consistent revenue for the fund and b) to leverage real-estate holdings that they already have as assets in the fund. Fund needs a quick cash infusion? Sell a garage. I doubt the Boy Mayor will go for it (after all, he probably has a deal to lease them to a donor, making that donor very rich), but it is nice to see a proposed solution that sounds somewhat sustainable.

I saw that quote and had the same thought. Typical Democrat thinking. Should be followed by "... then we need to tax it, drive them nearly out of business, then subsidize it."

GrassrootsPA : Abuse among cyber schools rampant, according to some officials...

Reading the article I don't interpret it as an attack on the system as a whole, but a call to arms against some possible fraud within the system. Even the first superintendent quoted in the article has taken the approach of "these aren't working, so I'm going to start a better one". If there is some fraud, let's NOT leave them alone, let us fix the system and save the taxpayers from being further taken advantage of.

First, if you believe that the Rohrer campaign is not doing opposition research on Corbett, I have a large slightly used bridge in Brooklyn available for sale. Second, since when is asking to see someone's voting and spending record an attack? What happened to the push for transparency in Harrisburg? If Sam is going to run on his record as a legislator, he can't freak out when someone asks to see that record.

Absolutely wrong. They have been prosecuting people who were campaigning ON STATE TIME - meaning they did NOT take leave, and were collecting a state salary for time they spent working on a campaign. Taking leave (so the taxpayers don't pay your salary) is legal, and the correct way to do it.

Yahweh is spot on with this assessment. The pension issue is VERY real, and VERY dangerous, and people like Fast Eddie have simply put it off for the next guy to deal with. They even used the emergency funds to patch this year's budget hole, so let's hope we don't have some sort of natural disaster to deal with next year. Rich - is there waste and inefficiency? Absolutely, but eliminating it takes significant time and effort, and even then it only covers a fraction of the shortfall. If Rohrer thinks he can patch a $6B budget hole with a few spending cuts, then by 2012 he will be calling up Obama begging for a bailout.

Hardly. Any politician who tells you that all of our problems can be solved without the possibility of a single tax rate increasing is lying through his teeth, and anyone who believes him has no understanding of economics. Bush Sr. said "no new taxes" and was then crucified when he had to raise one. The key to a good policy is cutting the taxes that discourage companies from locating here, to make the necessary (and likely unpopular) changes to streamline government services, and to invest in projects and incentives to bring new business to the region, and educate our citizens to become that workforce. Our next governor also has to deal with a massive pension statewide pension crisis and like it or not, that piper needs to be paid. Due to the economy, revenues are down and demand on government services are up. Borrowing only exacerbates the problem, and PA is already deep in debt. All other options having been exhausted, what would you suggest the state do? Kudos to Corbett for being honest with the people.
