Big Hollywood : Hollywood Imagination Drain: A&E to Resuscitate 'Psycho' Brand

I could see Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory" doing a great job as Bates. He's got a build and posture similar to Perkins and heaven knows he plays a huge weirdo (albeit benign) on TV.

The author is wrong. There are no new Nimitz class carriers in production. The USS George H.W. Bush is the last of the class and has recently joined active service. The design of the carrier class that will begin to replace the earliest of the Nimitz class whe they begin to retire is not even completed yet. As of today, the US has no carriers under construction and none in the pipeline. Do better research.

OK, here's "Marxists in New York"...to the tune of "Autumn in New York"...(with apologies) Marxists in New York, Why does it seem such a pity?, Marxists in New York, It spells the end of our city, Fetid rank crowds, and dank smelly clouds, Foul a park once so clean, They're making me feel - I'm lost. Marxists in New York, They bring the promise of squalor, Marxists in New York, Are spreading nothing but pain. Jokers with outstreched hands, Make demands for another's lands.
Nothing that has been revealed or said to this point has diminished my support of Mr. Cain. I believe his denials, and I also believe this to be a planned action to bring him down. For me, it would take a standard greater than "a preponderance of the evidence" to get me to change my mind about Mr. Cain. I would need an open admission by Mr. Cain to drop my support. And I am glad to see that many of Cain's supporters with much higher public profiles than me (about 99.9% of Americans) are also standing behind this fine American. BUT, as conservatives we cannot-we must not-behave in any manner that is reminicent of the liberal feminists & other various Democrats who denied their own principals and positions and continued to support Bill Clinton well beyond the point where the case aginst him for his numerous sexual abuses of various women was made "beyond a reasonable doubt." If the allegations against Mr. Cain ever rise to that level, our first loyalty must be to our principals. It would break my heart. Yet, I still do believe that this smear campaign is going to fail. Somewhere in this nest of vipers allayed against him is going to emerge another John Dean who is going to expose the entire cabal.

How about a slightly speculative different take on the painting? What if Rockwell gave this work the title "The Connoisseur " as a sarcastic dig at the art that was popular at the time Rockwell painted it? I imagine the gentleman we see, gazing at the painting and thinking, "people are paying money for things like this?" As to Herman Cain, this current kerfuffle will amount to nothing if Cain gets out in front of it, gets the NRA to waive the confidentiality restrictions and goes the full disclosure route. So far, nothing that has been reported has lowered my support for Mr. Cain.

I lived in Montgomery County from 1998 thru 2001, then moved a bit south to Warren County. Married a girl from Dayton. As is true of most of America, there are tons of wonderful people living in SW Ohio. But when it comes to the lefties in the area, I learned that most of the ones I met are certifiable moonbat, bull-goose loonies. Mind you, I grew up right outside NYC so I'm familiar with all levels of leftiy lunacy. But these 'Dayton Lefties" took the cake. And I met plenty of 'em via my ex-wife's family, which is led by my former FIL, a man who took the right hand turn signal off his car. He'd hold court bi-weekly with a small group of fellow retirees and their sessions sounded like 7 or 8 Professor Irwin Coreys (The World's Foremost Authority) yammering on about Bush, Cheney, Boris Badinov, Snidely Whiplash, etc. Absolutely incoherent. The Algonquin Round Table it was not. Dayton is basically a dying city, and these "Occupy Dayton" folks show why that is so.

Barack Obama will succeed in "fundamentally transforming" America, in two ways. His defeat in '12 will bring about the collapse of the Democratic Party as we know it. The coming defeat of the Democrats on the electoral heels of the 2010 massacre will be called more correctly an "anihillation". The result will be a purge of the progressives, socialists and America-haters. The Dems will attempt to return to what they were pre-'68. The second way Obama will bring about transformation is the widespread, majority rejection of the "progressive" policies that have put the US in the position she finds herself today. The hunger among Americans of all stripes for fiscal responsibility, government restraint, and a renewed moral clarity are already afoot. Obama's overreach in the opposite direction will result in exactly the opposite of what he intended.

I've called myself a "Cainiac" for months now. The things I like about him are first and foremost, he has not spent any of his life pursuing elective politics - if you think the business world isn't full of politics, I've got some stock in solar panel company for you to buy. Our problems aren't ones that lawyers or politicians know how to fix, we need a real executive, an accomplished conservative executive. Romney is not conservative. Second, his life story oozes American beliefs, American ethics, American spirit, and American triumph. He is inspirational. And a leader who is inspirational can spur those he leads to move mountains. Third, he is sunny. He sees problems as opportunities to make things better. There is no perfect candidate. I'd like to see Mr. Cain get better on his foreign policy statements. But I will enthusiastically pull the lever for him in 2012, and have great confidence in the positive effect he will have on our nation as POTUS.

I agree that it is an ongoing mistake by both Obama and GWB not to go to Congress for a declaration of war. But I doubt those feckless a$$-hats would vote for one. As I said Obama's lawlessness can be pointed to almost anywhere his administration has taken action on any issue. The czar-ocracy, selective law non-enforcement, etc.,etc. And bin Laden's killing was certainly an assasination, ditto al-Awlaki & the pirates. But illegal? I don't see how the killing of two sworn enemies of the US, who have acted as insurrectionists, by the US military on the orders of the POTUS is illegal. BTW, I think you were born too late. I bet if you were working during the age of the "studio system", you'd have rivaled Gable, Bogart, Cagney, etc. Why you ask? I just noticed your initials are "MGM" Louie B. would've loved you. ;-) Matt 6:33

I am usually in agreement with what you write here on BH Michael, but I have some exceptions here. Regarding al-Awlaki, I believe Obama acted within his powers in killing him. I have not yet read the argument defining how Obama broke any new ground here. The POTUS has the legal power to kill insurrectionists. Lots of precedents, here are two. (1) G. Washington and The Whiskey Rebellion. It did not result in violence, but GW had the forces, at arms, ready to do what needed to be done to the insurrectionists. (2) The Civil War. Lincoln killed hundreds of thousands of American citizens, without trials for anyone, and without any formal declaration of war. The fact that al-Awlaki was not operating on US soil, I do not believe curbs this or any POTUS" legal right to kill him. I also believe he acted legally with respect to the takedown of the Somail pirates (they were pirates after all) and the assasination of bin Laden. Obama has gone beyond the Constitution in plenty of other situations, and deserves the proverbial trip to the woodshed for an a$$-whippin'. But not in this case. Best regards and God's blessings to you.

Big Hollywood : Introducing: 'The Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged'

I first encountered Rand's ideas as a student of architecture when I read "The Fountainhead". How many books have an architect as the hero? Going thru the book, I found I agreed with much of what Rand infused the novel with. The ideas of individualism, holding fast to one's own ideas even in the face of defeat or humiliation. The toward the end of the novel when the idea of selfishness vs selflessness are laid bare, I was thrown ass-over-tea-kettle. I had trouble reconciling the ideas I had agreed with during the first 700 pages with the manner in which they were formalized at the end of the book. I couldn't get those ideas to harmonize with my Christian faith and it's self-sacrificing foundation of putting others first. Sometime later it came to me. The only way anyone can truly be a betterment to society and his fellow man is to be "selfish" first in order to be selfless towards his fellow man. If a man is going to adopt the teachings of Christ and be truly selfless, he must first shut out all opposing influences. Influences that say to him "keep a little more money for yourself, don't give away all those clothes you may need them", etc., etc. He must be selfish in the sense that his belief in the teachings of Christ come first and he must hold to that first and foremeost. The same with charity, if a man is going to maximize his charity he must be "selfish" in accumulating any wealth he can so as to maximize his charity. I may not be correct in sseing Rand in this way -especially in light of her atheism- but it is how I can philosophically make her writings work for me.

Big Hollywood : Part One: Bringing America Home Again

Religion is how civilization has been passed down through the ages. Man did not become "civil" to his fellow man until he began to love and worship something greater than himself. Cultures that placed man as the final moral authority have always and will always descend into murderous hells-on-earth. This is not to say that cultures of differing religions have not waged wars against each other in the name of their gods. But all the religious wars in all of history have not claimed as many victims as the wars and genocides foisted upon humanity by just the atheistic (communist/socialist-Russia, China, Cambodia, etc.) or paganistic (Nazism) regimes of the 20th century. And the radical nihilists that grabbed hold of the Democratic Party post 1968 laid the groundwork for what we now have in the White House. Fortunately, the economic morass that began w/ Bush 43 and was amplified by several orders of magnitude by the Obamaites, threatens the people's other god -their money. This alone will bring about Obama getting kicked to the curb. Then the 'New World Order" will be dismantled -economically first- and then Americans will rebuild the nation's ethics and mores to more closely resemble the vision of our republic that our founders intended.

When asked in some interview long ago who the best living American song writer was, Bob Dylan said, "Smokey Robinson". And Dylan is right. But after Smokey, it is hard to argue that there is anyone better than Bob Seger - and this includes Dylan. Seger's catalog and it's variety really is unmatched.
