BagOfNothing.com : Bag of Randomness

I thought this was a great post on the subject of student loans (http://tinyurl.com/7zttbjj). As someone that is involved in the financial counseling ministry at my church I know that many, if not most people that use student loans never consider their long term impact. They just assume that they must get a college degree and sign up for loans because that is what everybody else does. I don't think parents owe their kids a college education, but I do think they owe their kids sound advice on avoiding student loan debt.

I learned the car payment vs. repair cost thing from my dad and realized that you can seldom justify the cost of a new car solely as a response to an expensive repair. That is why I am still driving a 96 Maxima with 175,000+ miles on it. Also, I have the same issue about the test drive experience vs. the ownership experience. I have found that if you look hard enough you can find a rental company that rents many car models. Before we bought my wife's current car we were able to rent one for a weekend trip to verify how it fit. It helped verify the pros and cons. If a rental company doesn't have it you should as, the dealer for a weekend loaner.

The flying car looks like it is a balloon. If you look closely you can see small pivoting propellors on both sides. This is the same method they use to control the adverting ballons you see floating inside sporting arenas. They are strong enough to control a neutrally buoyant balloon, but not strong enough to lift a foam model.

Stefanie, Pilots are unionized and are therefore protected by contracts. While they can fire Joe Office Worker for this type of behavior the union contract probably prevents them from just dismissing a pilot the same way. This is not to be interpreted as union bashing either. I bet most folks in the union wish they could fire him as well.

Another point I picked up a while back is to remember that the interview is occurring with every contact. People think it doesn't start until they are in 'the room' or on 'the call'. I have heard of more than one person losing their shot at a job in the lobby. One case was when the interviewer asked 'did you have any trouble finding us' and the interviewee complained about the traffic and told about their difficulties locating the place. Even though the interview went on, the interviewer admitted later that they had decided not to hire the person as soon as they started complaining about the traffic.
