My advice here is don't try and compete with the merchant because they will get upset if you are targeting their brand name and if you do out rank them it is possible they could terminate your account. Rather find other keywords to rank for.

Yip research is the key, but the trick though is to learn who to trust because there are a lot of so called experts in this business.
