Big Hollywood : Trailer Talk: Renner's 'Bourne' Reboot Revisits Shady Spy Games

First one was just okay, second two blew. Problem with the series (as films -- apparently the books are less so) is that Bourne is nothing but a whiny b*tch. He has all these amazing abilities, and yet his only goal in life is to be left alone. A true hero seeks something transcendent, or at least tries to help other people in need (and not just his girlfriend). Bourne is a "hero" for the 21st century, a self-centered whiner. I suspect the new Bourne will make corporations the bad guys, since with Obama in the White House, the government is no longer eevil. After all, Obama can slaughter suspected terrorists all day long, and wiretap away to his heart's contentment, without so much as a wimper from the left. Also, remember when unilateral exertion of executive power, or politicization of the Justice Department, were considered bad things? Good times....

Big Hollywood : Dwayne 'Proud to Be an American' Johnson Mulls Political Future

I agree The Rock is smarter than your average athlete/actor. But what makes people here suggest he is a political conservative? He spoke at the 2000 RNC convention, but only as part of a visit to both the RNC and DNC conventions. Anyone got any other, more recent evidence?

Big Hollywood : Eastwood's Chrysler Super Bowl Ad a Nod to Obama?

Poor Clint. He's been suckered by the Hollywood left time and time again. Remember Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima? And more recently, J. Edgar. He made an anti-American movie written by a gay activist that gave credence to a rumor (totally unsupported by any evidence) that Hoover was gay. He works with the likes of Sean Penn and Matt Damon. You lie with rats, you get rabies. I understand, Clint isn't a doctrinaire conservative, he's more a libertarian. But all the more reason why he shouldn't be taking government bailout money (which is what Chrysler spent to make that ad) to support a dying company that is on life support supplied by U.S. taxpayers. It's overtime for Clint's career, sad to say. He should have quit the business after Gran Torino.

Big Hollywood : Oscar Favorite 'The Artist' a Silent Antidote to Modern Cynicism

I don't think he says the movie is IN French, but that it's a French movie. It was made by a French production company with a French director/writer and the two leads are French. I think it's fair to call it a French movie. Passion of the Christ is an American movie, even if the actors are speaking Aramaic.

Big Journalism : NBC's Brian Williams Intentionally Drains Excitement Out of Last Night's Debate

There is one thing conspicuously missing from these debates. Think about it -- what are these men running for? They all want to replace someone. Who is that? Let me see, who could that be.... Obama? I don't think there was a SINGLE question from any of the three questioners that mentioned The One by name. Wouldn't an obvious question be something about the guy they are vying to replace? Now, I'm no trained journalist, so maybe I just don't understand these things. But seems to me that one question could be, "What would you do differently than the current occupant of the White House?" Or, say, "Name three policies you would change from the current administration?" Or how about asking them what they think of the president. Here's a question: "Obama -- penny for your thoughts?" Okay, maybe you think that's too "personal" or "mean-spirited." How about asking about the number one issue on Americans' minds? Now, what could that be? Choose from the following: 1. The Terri Schiavo case 2. The space program 3. Sugar subsidies 4. Everglades preservation 5. The economy Not sure what I'd go with there. What do you think the American people care about most on that list? If only there was some scientific way to determine what Americans find most important. Some kind of... poll. Nah!

Wow. Wowsie wow-wow! I've been to Sundance. Never seen a bigger, more vulgar display of wealth. Multimillionaire celebrities fighting over swag bags worth hundreds of thousands. Stretch Humvees cruising down the main street. Eating sushi off the bodies of naked models.
I for one could watch 2 hours of that footage. Reminds me of the opening sequence in Herzog's Rescue Dawn (a tragically underrated Vietnam War movie starring Christian Bale, heartily recommended to everyone here).
Did you read the article? She compliments Streep's acting in the very first sentence. We on the right are so starved for attention, that we're sometimes willing to overlook the negatives in any film about one of our heroes. I haven't seen the movie, but I'll take Michael Medved's (equally cautioning) learned opinion, and this writer's, over yours.
Big Hollywood : 'SNL' Picks Up MSM's False 'Fire' Meme to Pin Romney as Jobs Killer

SNL had one great skit Saturday about the excessive "self-esteem" and unrealistic expectations of today's youth. They made fun of people with ridiculous college majors. They had one kid say, "I tried and therefore no one can criticize me!" It was hilarious. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Anyway, thought I'd mention it here because we should give credit when it's due and encourage the good stuff as much as we criticize the missteps.

Big Hollywood : 'Carnage' Review: Polanski's Latest a Bloody Good Time

Mr. Hanlon, you might have mentioned that this film is based on an award-winning play. That is a salient fact which explains its staginess, few characters, lack of other locations, etc. It also would have been helpful to mention the theme of the play/movie, which is political correctness. This is another fact that the readers on this site in particular would have found useful. If you're not going to do the most fundamental background research (something every other review and article on this movie mentions), why bother writing reviews? Also, your constant slobbering over "good acting" is getting tiresome. It's a "prestige" movie based on a critically acclaimed play -- of course it's going to have good actors. And, as others have mentioned here, why ignore the elephant in the room, namely, Roman Polanski's criminal history? This site has published probably dozens of articles on Polanski's checkered past which was recently very much in the news. It deserves at least a passing mention by you, don't you think?

Big Hollywood : Johnny Depp-Gate: Why Didn't Disney Lavishly Promote Lavish White House Party Surrounding an Upcomin

I'm going to call BS right now on the report that this party was thrown mainly for military families. From what I've read, they had a more low-key Halloween party earlier in the day for kids of the military. I bet euros to donuts that the reason this party was hushed up was that as the sun went down, they booted the military families, shut the doors, and threw their own more lavish bash for their real pals (celebrities, high rollers, big donors, etc.). Here's a call to enterprising reporters everywhere: Get a hold of the guest list for the Alice party. If it's not available, make a FOIA request. Find out how many military families actually were on that list. Interview them (if any exist). Let's get to the bottom of this. The White House doesn't memory-hole stuff like this for nothing. One last comment: This reminds me of how the press turned a blind eye to JFK's trysts with celebrity babes like Marilyn Monroe.

Sorry, but "Dr. Strangelove" is overrated. The humor is way too broad and depends entirely on accepting leftist stereotypes and tropes. Besides, we don't need a conservative film website to tell us to watch a movie that does everything in its power to ridicule the military and undermine national defense. The liberal movie sites out there do a good enough job touting "Strangelove" to one and all.

Is Mr. Knight suggesting that Michelle Obama is off-limits from caricature, a form of political satire that has been deployed for hundreds of years? I would like to ask Mr. Knight to describe a caricature of Ms. Obama that is NOT racist. Just describe any caricature at all. Caricature, as he well knows, is a time-honored method of satirizing the politically powerful. Or is the only acceptable depiction of Ms. or Mr. Obama one that is completely unexaggerated? Just let us know what the ground rules are up front. Let us know if there's a double standard or not.

Yes, LeCarre understands propaganda, which is why he's engaged in it throughout his career. Both in service and as a novelist -- or do you think he turned off his propaganda-making after he left the intelligence service? No, he just started serving a different ideology. Do you even know what the word "junta" means? It is a group that takes power by military force. And don't tell us Bush seized the presidency by military force.
Stop Loss did too, I believe. Seems to me like practically every Iraq War movie has soldiers with PTSD. The point is, contemporary war movies tend to make veterans look like unhinged madmen. Citing a few real-life examples of vets who've gone nuts does nothing to enlighten us about the average veteran's state of mind. Just as you wouldn't extrapolate from a few incidents of some minority group engaging in crime to mean that most members of that group are criminals. You wouldn't do that, would you? Btw, I happen to love Deer Hunter, I think it's the best of the Vietnam War movies as a work of art. I don't think it's the most popular of the lot, however, in terms of reaching the widest audience. I suspect it's made less in box office and video sales than its rivals with more battle action (like Platoon and Apocalypse Now). But even Deer Hunter probably owes what popularity it enjoys among the masses to the violent scenes in the film -- in particular, the brutal Russian roulette sequences, which are absolutely riveting because of the bloodshed. Also, the movie treats the soldiers and America with respect, it doesn't attack them (or America) as bloodthirsty fiends or bad guys. The anti-war message is undoubtedly there, but it is non-political; it points no fingers.

Of course I knew that the name-calling contained in the first two sentences in your post were quoted from someone else. Let's review your defense: I am not guilty of name-calling because they weren't my own words, I was instead quoting someone else approvingly. (And no, I don't give a crap if it was written by John LeCarre, "best-selling novelist, former MI agent, etc., etc." # 1, don't patronize us by acting like we don't know who LeCarre is -- a left-winger whose Cold War novels posited moral equivalency between the West and the Soviets. # 2, Appeal to authority is yet another logical fallacy, along with ad hominem.) Nevertheless, you do resort to ad hominem in your very own words in your next post (your reply to mine) when you call my notion that people like movies with thrilling battle sequences "stupid." Yes, you're right, I'm a moron for believing that people generally like action in their movies. After all, objective evidence shows us that small chamber dramas sell many more tickets than action movies do. What was I thinking! I bow to your demonstrably superior knowledge of audience preference. You also call me a "moron" (more name-calling, again in your own words!) for "mocking the pain of wounded soldiers" as shown in movies. Again you resort to anecdotal evidence to prove your point (because a few self-identified vets wept behind you in the theater. Even in the face of your blistering argument, I stand by my right to mock whomever and whatever I choose. I could also cite some military veterans I personally know (and can verify their status) who also mocked some of these filmic depictions of battle deaths. An entire comedy ("Tropic Thunder") was built around mocking these Vietnam War movies. (I highly recommend it, it's hilarious!) Gotta run, but I hope you don't get altitude sickness on that sky-high hobbyhorse of yours.

There's no question that many service men and women come home from war with psychological issues. And yet the vast majority of them don't kill anybody. Anecdotal evidence to the contrary is more misleading than enlightening. By focusing on those very few who get violent, and blowing them way out of proportion, Hollywood does a tremendous disservice to our veterans. They've become stereotyped as ticking time bombs just a bad dream away from going postal. This makes it harder for them to find work and otherwise assimilate back into society. Your feigned concern for veterans does them more harm than good, and is mere cover for your political agenda.

To wit, in your first two sentences alone: "...' United States has Gone MAD'" "How Bush and his JUNTA..." "... CONJURING TRICKS...." When it comes to name-calling, take a look in the mirror, please. So, why do people prefer the Vietnam War movies you mention? Because they include abundant and dynamic battle scenes. The frequent thrills supplied by the combat scenes make it relatively easy to tune out the anti-war messages, which are relatively subtle compared to the more recent crop set during the Iraq War. When people cite those Vietnam War movies, what they remember and refer to are the thrilling battle or other action scenes, not the downer moments (except to mock them, like the over-the-top death scenes in Platoon). The ant-Iraq War movies contain virtually no excitement and few if any battle scenes. They're all downer, no thrills. The exception to this rule is "Hurt Locker," which coincidentally is also the most popular of all movies set during the Iraq War.
