Glaring example: There's a scene with three guys running up some stairs and somebody further up on another flight of stairs opens fire with a machine gun on them. He cuts down the guy in front while the other two guys are still at the bottom of their flight. Do they turn around and run away while still out of sight of the shooter? Of course not! They run up the flight of stairs, one after another, right into the gunfire. The scene is hilariously inept. That is not "hands down brilliant" direction. That's hands down incompetent. Through the prism of nostalgia it's somewhat charming, but this sort of clumsiness highlights why Parks never broke into the mainstream.

Thus the protestant bible has 66 books while the Catholic Bible has 72 if Jeremiah and Lamentations are counted as one book and 73 if they aren't.

"Their" is of no more use than the generic "his" in identifying the gender or sex of the antecedent, and it carries the added disadvantage of disagreeing in number. 3. Moreover, at the same time that activists foist on us the awkward "their" as a singular generic, they discourage the use of gender specific nouns which might actually aid the listener or reader figure out who is what. Thus it has become politically incorrect to call someone an actress or waitress anymore - now they are all, male or female, actors or servers. What used to be very plain now becomes obscured. One can no longer say, "The waitress brought drinks to her table." Now one must say, "The server brought drinks to their table." Exactly how does that promote clarity, or even give credit to a female subject when it is due? These new trendy "commonly accepted" rules have one purpose only, and that is to gratify someone's sense of grievance. Clarity is secondary at best. 4. The use of the apostrophe in "80's" has just as long a history as the colloquial use of "their" as a singular generic, but it didn't stop you from starting this entire thread with a putdown of the one using the apostrophe this way. But now that the gate of using "their" as a singular generic has been opened in the interest of fairness and sensitivity, Ebonics and hitherto misplaced apostrophes will soon become "commonly accepted," too. After all, insisting that there is such thing as a "proper" place for an apostrophe is elitist and hurts the self-esteem of the offender, and we mustn't have that.

Since you don't get it, the adoption of "their" as a singular generic is a break from the traditional rationale of grammatical rules, which up to now has been the promotion of clarity. Once clarity becomes a secondary concern, there is little basis to enforce any rules of grammar at all. When "womyn" becomes "accepted," have fun using it. Obvious reactionary that I am, I'll be part of the resistance, standing athwart political correctness, yelling "Stop!"
