Big Hollywood : New to Blu-ray: Must-Own Classics and Must-Avoid Not-So-Classics

I now give you a special treat: You will go to the library, or Amazon, and purchase or borrow "Double Star" by the incomparable Robert A Heinlein. Here's a teaser: Someone asks a political operative why he's in politics. His reply? "Everything else is kindergarden games." Once you've read Double Star the conclusion of Limitless will make sense to you. Enjoy!

I'm surprised you didn't like "Limitless," John. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the ending was upbeat and surprising and wonderful. Perhaps you've been Bradley Coopered-out? If you are annoyed by the actor you wouldn't like the ending. I liked it, in fact I laughed out loud in joy and pumped my fist and our family all high-fived each other. Also, let's be frank. This is the best drug ever. As in Heinlein's story "Gulf," it defines the one real difference between a Superman and an ordinary man. If given a chance at a superpower, this would be the one I would choose.

Big Hollywood : 'Good Morning Vietnam'/'Dead Poets Society' Blu-ray Review: A Hit and a Competently-Made Miss

Wow, what a great summation of "Dead Poets Society." I thought I would give it another try while I was reading your review because I didn't see the themes you wrote about in the film at all. Instead, I found the film pretentious and ridiculous and harmful. Then I read your last three sentences. Heh. Well done, sir, well done.

Big Hollywood : BBC's 'Sherlock': Season Two Stunning Opener

We're thrilled with the new Sherlock Holmes. Perfectly updated to a modern world and with energetic young leads, it's captured our teen children's attention as well as ours. We watched the shows together and they love it as much as we do. Here's the most totally awesome part. The scripts follow Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. There's great plot twists, gun battles, and no nonsense masculinity. No political correctness. No socialist moralizing. No liberal tell! You'll love this series. Catch it while it's hot and the liberals haven't yet destroyed it.

Big Hollywood : White House Threw 'Alice in Wonderland' Party, Kept Press in the Dark

The reason this little news story is so important is because of optics. The "I can see Russia from my house" remark (actually a lie) and the "$100,000 wardrobe" (also a lie) of Sarah Palin's campaign were stories that resonated with the voters. The impression these stories left was one that Palin found impossible to overcome. This story resonates the same way. You have vials of blood, a creepy decor complete with Hollywood actors cavorting around in disturbing costumes, and all this going on behind the scenes while the published accounts were all about the oh-so-innocent military family party going on earlier in the day. The White House is going to try to bury this story deeply. Let's not let them.

My teenage Facebook friends have been all over "Hugo" the last few days. They're telling each other what a waste of time it was and they wished they had their two hours of life back. My mom Facebook friends have been warning other moms that "War Horse" is frightening and horrific to children and they should avoid it. Social media is unbelievably powerful.

I have the solution to this. Watch last year's shows or even older shows. You can Netflix them and watch the whole season night after night. We spent this fall watching the two seasons of "Jericho" on Netflix and it was a blast to sit down every night for the next Jericho episode. We did the same with "Better off Ted," "Psych" and "Eureka." It's fun!

"Let me help out the producers and writers a bit. Americans are the unambiguous good guys in this war. The jihadis are the bad guys. There is no grey area. We did not “bring it on ourselves,” and we have not only a moral right but a moral obligation to hunt them and their scumbag buddies down anywhere they hide. An American who consorts or sympathizes with them for any reason is a traitor who deserves to be hanged and his corpse tossed in a fetid swamp. Jihadis’ views, ideas, beliefs and grievances merit no respect and have no importance except to the extent that understanding their sick, idiotic ideology allows us to more effectively destroy them." Kurt, I'd pay for this site to read a paragraph like that. You rock.

Big Hollywood : 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Review: What's All the Fuss About, Again?

After the pedophilia expose of Hollywood revealed here, I understand why this bloated, pokey, cliche ridden mystery with no surprises is such a hit with the Hollywood crowd. The hero is a leftist newspaper reporter who sleeps with every woman he meets -- all those women fall in love with him, of course -- and the only scenes that are written with any skill or effort are the rapes involving very young women. What I brought away from the novel was a profound sense of the dissolution of the Swedish people. Young women are raised without fathers, engage in sex without boundaries, have children out of wedlock and raise their sons and daughters to live the same sad and meaningless existence. Rape is common, infidelity is even more common, and women are so disposable that lots of them can disappear without anyone really noticing. This is what a society looks like when it becomes entirely secular and Marxist. What a nightmare.

Where did you get your electrical engineering degree? Wal-Mart? At no time has any interference with onboard electrical devices been proven. In fact, the FCC made the regulations "in case" without any proof. This is a measure taken out of ignorance, not science, and anyone who knows electronics knows this. If you don't know anything about electrical engineering, ask yourself if you've ever forgotten to turn off your cell phone during a flight. Multiply that by a million times a million. If cell phones and laptops interfered with airline communications or systems, we'd have airplanes falling out of the skies like raindrops. They don't. I'm perfectly willing to turn off my laptop or cell phone during take-off or landing "just in case," but I do know my science. Someday maybe flight attendants will make you sit in your chair and quack like a duck in order to give the airplane a better chance at take off. I'll quack if they insist, but I don't have to believe it really helps!

There are sheep, and there are sheepdogs. I'm not a sheep. This incident at DIA really happened. No one was hurt. DIA then went back and constructed sidewalks to allow people to exit the trains safely if such a thing happened again. When you act like a sheep, you get treated like a sheep.

I'm not an Alec Baldwin fan but the airline rules are ridiculous. The "doors are closed for departure" but the plane was sitting on the runway, waiting in line. Sometimes those planes sit there for hours. There's no reason not to let people work or use their electronic devices, and then have them turn them off when the plane is really ready to go. When you read about airlines forcing people to sit for hours on a plane with no food, water, or bathroom facilities, it makes you want to request Alec Baldwin on every flight. If I'm ever stuck in conditions like that, I would be just as rude as Mr. Baldwin. Years ago the trains broke down at DIA and after an hour or so, people forced the doors open and walked to the terminal, while frantic DIA personnel tried to get them to go back into the trains and remain there. Would you meekly return, or would you walk out to the terminal and your car? I know what I'd do.

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Box Office Analysis, Spielberg's Biggest Mistakes, 'Swamp Loggers' Returns

Tower Heist failed because no one wants to see Wall Street executives get robbed. We're tired of OWS, we're tired of grubby little guys trying to "take it to the man" and even the eminently likable Matthew Broderick couldn't get me to see this film.
Big Hollywood : Blacklisted or Ostracized? Tell Me About It

Big Hollywood : Fetuses as Zombies? 'The Walking Dead' Takes on the Abortion Debate

Our family has come to the realization that this season sucks because everyone who writes the show or wrote the original comic hasn't gone further from a city center than a mass transit bus can take them. The first season was in the city and was fabulous. Once they moved to the country, bone headed mistakes started piling up. No guns on a farm? Really? The young Christian girl strips down and has sex with the Asian kid like a chick from Sex and the City? The characters search the woods by walking very slowly in a small group talking among themselves? The only person who has any wits at all is Daryl, and they put him on a horse with unsheathed arrows, something no one who hunts with arrows would ever do. Oh, yes, and the idiots try to get a zombie out of a well with people hauling on a rope while a heavy-duty truck with a winch is sitting Right. Behind. Them. Maybe in season three they'll move back to a city and things will be fun again. Right now the fun we have is ridiculing the show. Drinking game time!

Chuck premieres on October 28th. Set your DVRs, and save up your Subway dollars. We plan on going to Subway the next day for lunch to show our support. I wish Chuck had a bigger Facebook presence so they could coordinate a mass Subway visit. Advertisers really sat up and listened after the Chuck-Subway campaign to save the show last time. If we want conservative shows, we have to support conservative shows. Chuck is the only show on television that I can watch with my pre-teen and my teenagers and enjoy every minute together.
