And the immaturity hasn't stopped yet.

John - You are right about the Production Code. While restrictive (some of it silly), it also fostered a heck of a lot of creativity. Directors, writers, producers, actors, animators, etc. bent, twisted and peered around the line to test the Hays Code in many ways to see how far they could go without actually crossing over the line. For example, W.C. Fields created words to avoid the censors, like his swear exclamation, “Godfrey Daniel!”

And in the first-ever Warner Bros. Tweety cartoon, “Babbitt” and “Catstello,” based of course on Abbot and Costello, were two cats trying to capture and eat poor little Tweety. Animators slipped in a reference to “flipping the bird.” In one scene, Babbitt forces Catstello up a ladder to Tweety’s nest. Babbitt calls up, “Give me the bird! Give! Me! The Bird!” Catstello breaks the fourth wall and slyly says to the audience, “If the Hays office would only let me, I’d give him the bird all right!”

"leverage" -- ouch. Always makes me think of using a crowbar.

In a face-to-face meeting, say "let's talk later" instead of "we'll talk offline"

You can get a Han Shot First T-shirt at CafePress and ThinkGeek. Wonder if anyone would do an "Occupy" of the Skywalker Ranch until Lucas bows to our demands.

That list of the "10 most unnecessary giant monster movies of all time" is sorely lacking, because it omits the American version of Godzilla and practically anything made by the Sy Fy channel.

Just think if Lucas had employed a staff member whose entire job was telling Lucas "no," "bad idea," "stupid," "illogical," "laughably dumb," etc. -- and having the authority to do something about it.

Look, I enjoy the heck out of the universe Lucas created, and many fine writers such as Salvatore and Zahn enjoy playing around in it. And I don't think the originals were as awesomely great or the prequels are as bad as many believe they are. But I'm not aware of anyone who has done more than Lucas to alienate the very people who made him wealthy beyond the dreams of avarice.

Agreed. Blue Bloods, Jessie Stone Movies, Ike: Countdown to D-Day, etc., proves that Tom Selleck is a tremendous talent.

Re: Boom Town, "Oil men portrayed as pioneers and heroes." -- Yep. And would Clark Gable play anything other than a hero? (Seriously, did he ever play a villain after he hit it big?)

Harrison Ford USED to be that kind of draw, too.

I didn't take it as an Obama ad, but as yet another in a series of ads touting how Detroit is coming back from the edge of the abyss. Sure, it echoes Obama's themes, but if a city as socially and economically blasted as Detroit -- as are many big cities, including my own -- can turn things around and become a vibrant city once again, I say more power to them. (Even with -- or despite -- the auto bailouts.)
