It's almost never that, for me as a worship leader. In fact, it's the opposite. I don't want people to hear me anymore, I want them to hear the guy beside them. It's corporate worship. It doesn't stroke my ego at all if a congregations knows all of the words to "How Great Thou Art." If I was singing a song I wrote, I could see that being a problem.

Totally agree. When I am in the band, I love to hear something other than my monitor. When I am in the audience, I love to hear something other than the people on stage. It's corporate worship, not a concert. But I've been guilty of backing away from a mic before people really know the tune. That's a musical train wreck. Only on songs the congregation knows well does it serve to expand worship.

I'm pretty big on doing something awkward during the very first meeting. For example: the opposite of Point 1. Sob. But not about anything important, about American Idol, or Kanye. Another example might be wearing a beret or cummerbund and pretending it's totally normal. Exotic facial hair will work, unless you are in youth ministry, because that, um, is normal. That makes for good "the first time I met you..." stories a few years down the road. Or, it makes for a really short first meeting with no subsequent meetings.

Yeah, I got a nickname that way once. My name is Ben, and I have a son named Ben, but during prayer time I was referred to as "Big Shane." There are still some folks that call me big Shane, as a result.
