A key point of confusion that I have had (not necessarily incorrectly either) is that technically and by most dictionaries the word 'atheist' is the opposite of 'theist', just as is the case with 'symmetrical' and 'asymmetrical'. The words agnostic and atheist are a little foggy- I've been told that in philosophical circles the meanings differ quite a bit. Safe to say that anyone who calls themselves an atheist is not someone who has an irrational belief in their being no deity without having some strong proof. For one, this it is (probably) impossible to prove, and another is that it would be almost as absurd as believing that there is a deity without having some strong proof. 'Atheism' is simply a tag under which rational and reasonable people assemble under- so many diverse people that a single tag could never hope to be totally sufficient- in order to discuss all sorts of matters in a rational and reasonable way. 2: Scientific theory is not a belief. It is humanity's only tool for obtaining reliable knowledge in this universe. It has been refined over the ages to be more resilient to the inheritance weaknesses in the human mind and more robust against all biases. It's a candle in the dark of irrationality and the unknown. 3: You are being simultaneously ignorant, antagonistic and pedantic. Now keep pounding your chest, it is funny. As for agnostics, I would say an agnostic is someone who states they don't know (meaning they give the idea that God exists a probability higher than .001). I could also argue that all theists are agnostic as well depending on the definition used. It is not a belief that I don't believe in Leprechauns or an invisible man under my bed. A belief has no concrete evidence that backs up a premise. It is not a belief when you dismiss a premise because there is absolutely no concrete evidence to support it.

Looks like I can get around it, not that it matters because you can invent meanings to any word you want and not accept actual definitions: The Macquarie Encyclopedic Dictionary definition of "belief" is: 1. that which is believed; an accepted opinion. 2. conviction of the truth or reality of a thing, based upon grounds insufficient to afford positive knowledge: Most other Dictionaries tender similar definitions. Those definitions are basically saying that a "belief" is not formed by critical scientific investigation but by emotions, feelings and unsubstantiated opinion. As a child I can hold a "belief" that the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are real characters. I can have a "belief" that Unicorns exist and that Ghosts and Goblins etc. are also real. As an adult I can hold a "belief" that any one of the numerous gods purported, do actually exist, and that humans have an immortal "soul". Some even have a "belief" in UFO's, the power of crystals and a myriad of other unproven paranormal activity. Atheists do not accept that any of the above imaginary creatures or powers do exist as no scientific evidence is extant in support of those propositions. This is not a "belief", it is just lack of scientific evidence in their support. ************************* As for the God Particle, it will either be proven or it won't over the next little while. Unlike God, who will never be proven because man invented him/her/it.

Atheism is a lack of belief. Again, I don't have total knowledge about Leprechauns. It is possible they can exist just like it is possible there is an invisible man who lives under my bed and does absolutely nothing. However there is zero evidence for God, the Leprechaun or the man under my bed so if you ask me if I think any of them exist, my answer is no to all. It is impossible to have absolute knowledge of the universe, but if you make the claim that a God or a Leprechaun exists, it is up to you to prove it, until then, I'm an atheist. As for Higgs Boson, the God particle has nothing to do with God...I suggest using Google and a little reading comprehension before spamming the internet with your "knowledge."

I'm not a college grad. I did go to university for 3 years though, just didn't earn enough credits in my major. I don't think atheism comes about in university, but high school. Existential novels in English and learning basic science can open ones eyes up.
