Big Hollywood : BH Interview: James Badge Dale of 'The Grey' Talks 'The Pacific,' Fassbender's Oscar Snub

I feel bad, because I _hated_ Chase, and that has influenced my acceptance of this guy as an actor. But he was good in The Pacific.

Big Hollywood : Secret's Out: Why Letterman Show Didn't Book Many Female Comics

The thing is, I agree with him and Hitchens. Most comic scouts agree with the viewpoint. They just can't say it. If you've ever watched something like "Last Comic Standing" (terrible show, but bear with me) you know two things comic scouts hate: mixed people making dumb "I'm half X and half Y, so I Z!" jokes ... and women complaining about their boyfriends. Yes, there have been funny female comedians. But they are very, very few and far between. And the Apatow thing really just proves the point: if you find Apatow's movies funny, which I don't, you find women ACTING LIKE MEN funny.

Big Hollywood : Found Footage Fever: Reality TV Hits the Big Screen

I don't get all the Apollo 18 hate. For me, it was the best found-footage movie as far as being mostly believable (except for the terrible ending, the way it was filmed and the non-pandering dialog were amazing). Cloverfield is a close second but it's a bit too schlocky. The rest are just ... meh. Blair Witch was the original disappointment, Paranormal Activity was kind of fun once (and never needed a sequel) and I don't have the requisite belief structure to enjoy a 'posession' story :-P

Big Hollywood : 'It's a Wonderful Life': The Stories Behind the Yuletide Classic (Part 2)

I have to say I find it greatly disappointing that anyone would say Donna Reed "wasn't a strong lead", and shocking that Stewart would pin the movie's failure on her. Maybe I'm biased because as a kid I had the biggest crush on Reed, but she was great in IAWL. Her character was strong and supportive and key to several scenes. Look to how she offers up their money in the building and loan, or takes the initiative to start wiring people when she knows George is in trouble. And as for acting, the scene where Stewart is knocking things over and screaming, where she just looks at him, always strikes me as very effective. Stewart and Reed were both critical to this movie.

Big Hollywood : Adam Carolla Defends Mitt Romney Against Occupy-Style Groupthink

When people describe O'Reilly like that, it just reinforces my opinion that left-wingers form their opinions of anyone with whom they disagree entirely from left-wing narratives. Have you ever watched Bill O'Reilly? I'm not a fan, but I'm not a fan because he's nothing like people claim. He is too 'reasonable', too 'nice'. He may have started out yelling and screaming, but now he is almost mouse-like, particularly when he has some left-wing nutjob on his show. Jon Stewart screams and acts like a jerk more than O'Reilly does, because O'Reilly realized that 'softening' was the best way to stay on the air, while Stewart realized yelling was the best way for him to keep his fan base of constant, purposeless outrage.

Just a note, because someone will point it out snidely rather than helpfully: I frequently see people correctly move the preposition to the front of a phrase, but then bizarrely add a second preposition to the end ("with which to communicate with", like McCartney's "in this ever changing world in which we live in").
"The Thin Red Line" isn't just bad. It's atrocious. It's pretentious nonsense ("What is war?") compounded by ham-fisted stunt casting. Had he picked one or the other it might have worked, but the two do not work well together.
Big Hollywood : Why Conservatives Need Patience and the Writers Need Help With 'The Walking Dead'

"Indeed, there are whole comedies that play with this ridiculous aspect of zombie films, like 'Zombieland'" Zombieland ... was ... not ... funny. It wasn't even a mediocre Zombie film. And I imagine the star only got the job because Michael Cera wasn't around to mope his way through another movie.

What if you hate American Beauty because it was trite, pretentious, and over-hyped? The plastic bag scene alone was face-palmingly bad. It's a pretty rote 'the suburbs are evil' story. And 'The Matrix' was completely ripped off from the comic book 'The Invisibles'. Other than the obvious similiarities, the comic book was passed around on set as reference. Plus, the sequels were terrible ... like the author of 'The Invisibles' said, the Wachowski's should have kept stealing from him.

I realize I'll tick off some die-hard libertarians ... but taxation is not theft. Taxation can be theft, and I'm not a fan of progressive taxation ... but the federal government would not function in modern society without some form of funding. Even if the federal government were just an Army and a few rules to enforce someone would have to pay for it.

I really dislike it when someone claims their product isn't successful because "people are stupid". As a big Community fan, I think he's closer to the mark with the 'spiritual' bit. Community is a positive show. We live in an almost incessantly negative culture. Being positive is difficult. The negative shows will always attract more viewers. The recently-canceled "Men of a Certain Age" was a victim of the same problem. I'd love to see both of them find an 'angel' who would allow them to continue.

People really like this movie? I honestly can't get past the clunky title. It's like "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" in its awfulness. Sounds like a Troy McClure vehicle.

Well, that's the direct result of feminization. We've lost the idea of masculinity, therefore nobody can project it on screen. I don't actually think we're in some glowing age of actresses, it's just that the actors are so bad that the actresses look better by comparison. Some of the attempts to push actresses to the fore have just been so embarrassing, like the constant attempts to 'shake up' all the terrible remakes by making the woman the action hero ('The Hitcher', 'The Thing', etc).
And all you need to know about the 'regulatory reform' of credit cards is that it caused global credit card interest rates to skyrocket, lowered the availability of credit cards to underqualified/first-time applicants (such as college students) and caused higher purchase point fees. What, precisely, is wrong with charging higher fees for delinquent account holders, or people with no or bad credit history? What, precisely, is wrong is using the imbalance to reward your 'good' customers with low rates? Because that's how it was done before the 'regulators' saved us. Now everything sucks.

Big Hollywood : Morning Call Sheet: Malick News and Reviews, 'American Reunion' Trailer, and My 'Shining' Heresy

Umm ... okay? And my local high school production of 'Hamlet' puts that hack Olivier to shame. At his best, Kubrick didn't make movie versions of books. He made movies that were their own entity. Kubrick's 'The Shining' is its own entity. Certainly it has some flaws (the acting does feel a bit wooden and stagey at times precisely because they went through each scene over and over) but its best parts are better than just about any other horror movie. That scene on the stairs alone is so well-done ("Gimme the bat! Gimme the bat!"). Steven 'Wings' Weber and TV-movie quality simply cannot hold a candle to that. But I have a friend who honestly thinks the Star Wars prequels are good. So there's no accounting for taste.
