I think that's right. Also, I think many of the writers wanted to address modern concerns and that's hard to do when you place yourself in a world that is so completely different from the present. So they just sort of skipped the utopianism.

You're right. I can't think of a single film where they pointed out that the other side was sclerotic from top to bottom. They always seem to take for granted that the other side is superior, but still evil. Interesting thought!
