The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has always quoted a processing time of between 3 and 4 months. You may get it a bit earlier, but don’t be surprised if it takes even longer than 4 months.

Because I thought that in order to be claimed as a military dependent you had to be under 18 or be in college, and then even if you were in college, you were no longer a dependent once you turned 23. I graduated college when I was 21, so have not been military dependent eligble since then (can't go on base & such). So i'm nore sure how you would be a dependent at age 25? The GI Bill states that as long as you get married after the benefits are transferred, you can use them. So I would just have my father transfer before we got married. My future husband unfortunately cannot transfer his benefits to me yet as he has only been in 4 years, and you have to be in for 6 before you're allowed to transfer beneifts.

But, what I would like to know, is if I transition to the new 9/11 GI Bill with my remaining months, could I transfer some of the entitlement to my spouse? For example, I believe I will have about 9 months left over when I finish my degree, to transfer to her, which with the Chapter 30 bill is about $12,000. .Now here are some additional questions: 1) Can I transition to the new bill right now? I have 4.5 years active duty service as of right now, post 9/11? 2) Can I give partial months to my wife right now? 3) It will cost her about $12,000 or less to finish her schooling; under the new 9/11 bill how much does 9 months give her?

So far as the distance learning question- you are correct, if you do only distance learning you will not receive your BAH or book monies. However, do note that if you are married you will surly not be eligible to be claimed by your father/mother as a dependent; if your husband-to-be elects (that is, if he's eligible to do so) to transfer his funds to you then you may be entitled to the education funds.

I am 22 and HAVE NOT been a dependent for about a year now, could I use this to get an MBA next year? Also, i read that if you take only distance learning / online courses you don't qualify for the monthly housing stipdend. I am getting married in a few months (would transfer benefits before then if possible), and my fiance is getting transferred to Kadena. I know they have education facilites on base, would they all be regarded as 'distance learning' most likely? However, if one or both get scholarships or do not use the benefit I want the other to get those unused months. Do I just stack them, in other words, do I elect 36 months for both and whoever uses it first gets it? My daughter is the priority, but I want any unused months to be there for my wife. Questions of this nature should be directed to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs. It is their program to determine eligibility of military members. All Coast Guard (CG) Headquarters does is oversee the transfer of benefits (TEB) to CG family members.

I got out of the Marine Corps on October 18th after service of 13 years. I received and honorable discharge and the reason for getting out of the Marines was due to high-year tenure. Last night I went onto the TEB link to check the status of the application and was not able to login. When I got out of the Marine Corps my sons stepfather who is in the Navy enrolled my son into DEERS system so my son can have health care. His stepfather checked the TEB link with his password and my son is in the system for TEB. My son start date is Aug, 1st 2009 and an end date of Aug, 1st 2009. How can I get this corrected? I want to transfer my education benefits to my son.
