Ron Lubensky - Deliberating online : Can we disintermediate power relations through the use of technology?

Hi Paul, like you I have an interdisciplinary interest in learning and deliberation. Before going too deep into deliberative theory (although I'd recommend that you read Dryzek 2000), I'd recommend attending or even facilitating at a deliberative event. Hook into NCDD and see what's happening. I say this from experience: your view of what should happen (ie normatively) will be influenced by what you see people actually doing. Also, make a clear distinction between partisan, activist stakeholder-driven deliberation and randomly-selected citizen deliberation. Much work is currently happening to build online systems to support deliberation. There is much argument about how facilitation (to impress those deliberative norms) can be enacted online.

Paul Treadwell - Career Ex ‘08 - Digital Storytelling - Day 3

Hello Beth, I used to throw out the schedule, figuring that maximum freedom would lead to maximum creativity, but lately (maybe it's age creeping up on me) I tend to use the schedule more - it helps maintain focus and cause me to be a bit more disciplined. And my schedules are generally blocks of time, 3 hour chunks that I try to structure by working backwards from my end goal. Six weeks full time is more intensive than I have to work with. You have room to flow freely there but my advice, such as it is, would be to have some benchmarks along the way and to try to guide, without constricting freedom....sounds kind of useless when I phrase it that way. The biggest pitfall is ending up with nothing to show at the end. There has to be something the kids can show to others that represent an accomplishment. Youtube really helps, cause the video can be posted there and it's all very public and provides "thrills" (if you will). The other challenge in my experience is dealing gracefully with that one obnoxious participant - there's always one, whether its kids or adults, who will create ample opportunities to derail or sideline the positive energies you're building up. I'd love to know more about your program, as well as how it turns out, what your thoughts are, ect. Cheers, Paul

How did you outline your daily activities? Did you end up throwing outlines out and letting kids run it? Any advice is greatly appreciated! I couldn't believe it had been written in the 1920s. I was interested enough that I explored the idea of writing his biography and obtained access to his voluminous personal papers at Colombia University and the University of Minnesota. Its truly making the world smaller, in a better way.

I agree that in some way, people may feel detached because after all they are still talking to a screen but in the long run, it is more economical and I think that as technology gets better and better, clearer sound and images will compensate for the human touch somewhat.

Although we may not have super high speed connections yet, but there are certainly many projects in the world to help more people get onto the Internet.

To me, an utopian world that is brought on by technology is not about high speed internet, its about the the simple ability to communicate with each other and hopefully, make the world a better place to live in.
