SOOOO True! My laptop has Ubuntu Linux on it and runs flawlessly without viruses. Too bad I have to keep sucky XP on my desktop to run some hardware specific drivers and programs. My wife got a laptop with Vista and it REALLY sucks. She had to go back to XP to get her printer to run. (she's too timid to try a REAL operating system.)

Nooo! You fool! Now you've read the spoilers and will never be happy again! What have you done?! ;-) Seriously, though, that movie rocked. Zachary Quinto as the young Spock is just sublime and the fast-paced action combined with the gorgeous design will have you drooling until long after the credits. The only big weakness is the bad science they presented. Oh boy, that sucked.

I would not regard traffician to be a moral relativist by any means. The reasoning that traffician uses in the example is ultimately utilitarian; an action is acceptable to the extent that it increases net happiness and the situation in which the person held hostage is already dead is one in which homicide against the kidnapper cannot increase human happiness. This is happiness defined in terms of objective criteria and observation. A Kantian approach would look at the nature of the act itself and see if there if that as a rule can be logically justified, but the process is an objective one despite taking a wholly different view of morality. Moral relativism would define the morality of the decision purely in terms of the belief system of the person making that decision. Though most forms of theism assert objective morality asserted by the creator, attempting to create a code workable for all humanity cannot be based on theistic codes because such codes are derived purely from such subjective experience as "divine inspiration". Where you find workable items that are common to many such codes, they can only be proven workable in the context of ethical analysis not based upon the assumption that the rule is such simply because G-d said so.

I touched upon the morality bull crap pushed by theists in my latest post as well. Ask a theist their views on divorce, abortion, homosexuality, etc. and you will not get absolute agreement from all of them, and the more questions you ask, the more diverse the answers will be.

I've coolly and comely blasphemed plenty but not for a challenge? (is this supposed to be difficult) would love to date an atheist (call me). never used the spaghetti monster but debated quite a bit. (I meet regularly with Mormons, Buddhists, wickens and five or six varieties of evangelicals (they each have a personal god.) for debate.) I didn't love Dawkin's anti-god book, i must say. Christopher Hitchens is an amazing writer but his God book wasn't his best. (I still love all his writings tho. check out "unacknowledged legislation" and "letters to a young contrarian" also his books on mother Theresa, bill Clinton and henry Kissenger are fun starters. i think I rate about a 2.0. nice quiz.

I have received a couple of those bibles myself. The people handing them out are certainly nice. And I do respect their honesty and courage to put themselves out there for what they believe. But that doesn't meant that I won't criticize (nicely!) them for believing it. It is all about separating the belief from the person.
