Dr Barry Napier - Anti-green feeds on the suffering of others

I agree with you on the Korean cement pile! But, there is a third type of anti-green... people like me. Highly informed, up-to-date information. Cares for his environment and people. But does not like 'green' ideology. Why speak of Russian 'totalitarianism' when environmentalism is heading the same way, demanding everyone should comply? Referring to hotels (not like the Korean one) in a number of publications, I have pointed out that 'green' hotels are nothing of the sort. They just use good management systems. No need to call it 'green' at all. In fact, we should ditch the term 'green' and stop adding it to everything and everybody. It is just a cute flash term, but not a useful one. And yes - I am very familiar with all the current arguments... my sympathies are with the more than 32,000 US scientists (plus all those in other countries) who say CO2 is not a pollutant, there is no global warming, and climate is quite normal in a cyclical fashion! I have found no evidence to support 'green'. Now you have it in black and white.

Since I know you and everyone that comes across this site are either somewhat of a hippie or is focused on improving our nation/world by making "green" improvements and trying to live a green life you should take a look at this post I came across on PetermansEye.com. All will enjoy the greenness that shines through! http://www.petermanseye.com/anthologies/who-didn-...

KatieR - Are E-books Green?

I am a paper book advocate 100%. If someone is worried about the amount of paper used, then buy a used book. There is something so comfortable and cozy about a used book, knowing someone else has leafed through the same pages, finding notes the other person may have written in it. It's just not the same with an e-book. Also, you can recycle all the pages out of a paper book when you're done, if you don't want to give it to a used book store. You can't really do that with an e-book.

MarinC - The Oasis That Was Sahara

It's refreshing to see another perspective! The truth is, Earth's climate changes and has changed constantly, albeit very gradually. Our lifestyle is definitely having an impact on the speed at which the climate is currently changing, and will have major consequences for us--and soon. But it's also important to look at the larger picture from time to time, and remember that no matter our desires or intentions, our planet is much greater than we are, and to some extent we'll always be powerless, as Elijah stated above.

Lewis, WA at the spectacle of Mt. Rainier. Despite the distance, the mountain makes its presence known to residents of the quickly-growing Seattle urban area, reminding them that the wilderness is never far away, though they may be in the heart of the city. Thanks for the reminiscence!

MarinC - Waste Not Food Not

It seems like adding food waste to garbage, where it will head to a landfill, wouldn't be such a bad thing. One might even think it could help the rest of the trash to decompose more quickly. Unfortunately, organic waste in landfills don't decompose properly, and instead rot, releasing methane into the atmosphere. So composting, in addition to making for great gardens, helps curb the addition of more greenhouse gases into our air.

KO - Is it safe?...Is it safe?

I have lived most of my life in the Northeast, and have driven all types of vehicles in the snow. The car that was the best in the snow was my Subaru wagon, of course. But my first car was a Toyota Corolla, and it was great in the snow. All you really need is a front wheel drive vehicle. The engine compartment is obviously the heaviest part of the vehicle. So it makes a lot of sense that a front wheel drive vehicle would be significantly better than a rear wheel drive vehicle. If you have a great pair of All Season tires, and you're not driving around on poorly maintained dirt roads, your Corolla will be fine. I wouldn't give up on it. Also, when it comes to 4x4s, they aren't worth it for regular commuting purposes. You aren't supposed to use 4 wheel drive on dry road surfaces, as it wears the gears quickly. You'll find that most of the winter the roads will be dry, only on storm days will you really need the 4 wheel drive. And as otherwise it is rear wheel drive, it's not all that great in the winter. If the roads are at all icy, you'll be slipping around all over the place. My husband and I share one car, a Honda Civic Hybrid. It has great All Season tires, and he commutes out to the middle of nowhere in a lot of snow. He's never had a problem. I actually prefer public transportation in the snow, because other drivers seem to forget how to drive when the weather turns unpleasant. Stick to your guns! You can survive with one car in the snow!

I think this is true of other issues in the world as well, namely working to solve some of the major health issues and violent conflicts. It's easy for people to tire of what they believe are "social" or "humanitarian" causes. That is why the effort to put the environmental movement in terms of economic and other tangible benefits is so important.
