Stephen Holmes - Generalists and Specialists . . . Which is Ideal?

This is difficult indeed. I think it's important to start with a clear definition of "specialism" and "generalism". Is a specialist someone, for example, who is a Kerberos guru, a java guru or both? Or is "specialism" something that's assigned based on an individuals competency? i.e., Hey Bob, go learn everything about late binding in Java because we'll need this skill and I'd like you to head that one up. Bob can accept or decline of course, or make a counter offer.

I would contend specialism is something that's defined in the context of the development project being resourced - if the project requires intimate knowledge, for example, of the OpenID API and there's a team member with this knowledge, but they don't know Python - and that's the delivery language - are they a "specialist" or a "specialist advisor"?

Summary:

At the start of a project, the assigned resources should declare their skills in the context of the project and make offers and counter offers (as part of the project kickoff) but they should also be challenged on areas they'd like to grow into so their resource manager can facilitate a healthy mix of "daily grind" and "learning" as part of the work mix. Measuring success in a specialism might then be based on sprint content durations and other factors that could be used to tweak resourcing during each sprint.

I would propose that a skills matrix is required and "managed" as a project artifact so the project team can make appropriate offers for work (for the success of the project)

Those wishing to learn an "appropriate" skill might opt to work more closely with said specialist (a la career growth) whilst working in their own area.

Lastly, I might make the point that everyone, in some way, is a specialist

It's not as fancy as penzu, but does have some useful features implemented, such as tagging and displaying by months. I believe simplicity and usability are more important eventually.
